Song of the Day: Dance Monkey

Today’s song is Dance Monkey by Tones and I.

Some electropop from an Australian group.
It’s the definition of an ear-worm.
It topped singles charts in over 30 countries when it was released.

While simplistic in style, there is a level of depth to the lyrics.
It stresses the pressure of performers, who are always asked to entertain.
Even when they conclude to make the recipient happy, the next person wants to see.
It’s an endless cycle.

I’ve never seen anybody do the things you do before.

You know the song is huge when your father is the one to introduce the song to you.

Most notice the piano, but that baseline is rather smooth.
Hard to pick out from the claps/snaps/drum-kit layers.

The harmony with the harsher repetition of the vocals really speaks to me.
It’s a cyclical loop. Really plays into the endless nature of ‘the performance’.
“And when you’re done I’ll make you do it all again.”
