Song of the Day: Hallelujah

Today’s song is Hallelujah by Rufus Wainwright.

Folk rock.
I’m well aware this is coming from something as goofy as the Shrek soundtrack.
Fight me. That was actually a fantastic mix of music for a film (this track included).

This is my favorite rendition of the song.
Nothing against the original by Leonard Cohen. Just grew up with this one.

It’s not a cry you can hear at night,
It’s not somebody who’s seen the Light.
it’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah.

Unironically still get choked up at parts of this song, over a hundred listens later.

Just love this one. It’s a heartfelt track of sorrow and recognition.

Jeff Buckley has a pretty good cover as well.
Also, I seriously recommend the rendition that Kate McKinnon performed on SNL.
As a context piece, it’s extremely powerful, especially knowing what that night meant to millions of people.
